If a computer suddenly slows, its most likely related to an action that is drawing CPU processing away from other applications. The following examples are common culprits:
A.) Antivirus software (Particularly Norton/Symantec. When a virus scan is being run, depending on the software, it can suck a lot of CPU processing.)
B.) File writing operations (Copy/pasting and transferring files. Also if you are using a program such as a video editor or any other program that saves big files, that may also be drawing CPU power).
C.) Background applications. (They may be minimized applications, system tray applications, applications that are executing processor intensive actions, or background services performing updates [These can be disabled by going to Start > Run > msconfig]).
D.) Actual viruses (Remove them ASAP).
E.) Programs that are set to use high CPU power (For example a video encoder may be set to use more CPU power than normal).
If you find yourself in a situation where you are experiencing a slowdown, start the Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL or right click the Taskbar and select Start Task Manager) and find the process that is using the most CPU power. Determine what program this is and either kill the process or research online any possible reasons why its occurring and how to rectify it. Be cautious when killing processes. Sometimes, killing a process this way can corrupt the program or you may lose unsaved work.
