There are dozens of good books about D-Day, certainly enough to fill a large shelf in your city library. -Among the best in my opinion are "The Longest Day" by Cornelius Ryan and "The Steel Wave" by Jeff Shaara.
I highly recommend you see these three movies to learn about the soldier's viewpoint of the Normandy Invasion/D Day. See Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan and The Longest Day. You can probably check them out of the Library for free.
