different parts inside the gearbox will have driped dry and make more noise after starting from cold this noise should go away fairly quickly as the running gears move the oil around the gear box
It will normally start with a leak at the pump. If the impeller breaks you will hear a rattling noise at the pump.It will normally start with a leak at the pump. If the impeller breaks you will hear a rattling noise at the pump.

Sounds more like a lack of oil or oil circulation problem. I hope you are not one that races the engine to hear how good it sounds. Flush the engine, change the oil and filter and never race a cold engine to warm it up. The rattling may be worn out lifters. Now pray. lol
Define not start?
Is this an automatic or manual transmission?

You might want to have the CV joints checked. When bearings start to go out, they make a "clicking" or "rattling" noise while driving - especially while making turns.

Most likely your safety neutral switch or your PRNDL swith is going bad Go to a transmission shop and have it replaced. Or possibly the linkage is loose. Also go to a transmission shop and have it repaired.
One way you can tell is if there is a knocking noise or rattling noise when you start the car. Also, the belt may keep making the noise until you accelerate over about 2500 rpm...depending on the vehicle. Check to make sure the belts arent too tight or too lose. If all else fails the best thing to do is let a shop look at it.
