They just want to "reel you back in" (as my best friend puts it) so you can get stuck back in the cycle. they just want to make you feel safe and good for a minute so they can hurt you all over again. if you are the one that ended it, they have a burning need to get you back so they can then end it, making them feel that they have control again. don't get sucked back into the pit of misery.
