Tsunamis are a natural geohazard caused by plate tectonics that result in large-scale underwater earthquakes. Therefore, there is little that can be done (in the same way that human activity cannot prevent earthquakes or volcanic eruptions).

However, we can put tsunami prediction measures in place and evacuate areas where there is an imminent risk of a tsunami. Some environmentalists have recommended planting woodland along the shoreline where there is a high risk of tsunamis because the trees can absorb some of the wave's energy. In the 2004 tsunami some areas protected by trees suffered significantly less damage and fewer deaths than areas that were not protected by trees.

If you are building in an area in which earthquakes and/or tsunamis are expected, you can built stronger structures, for example by using 2 by 6 lumber instead of the more usual 2 by 4. Better still, build internal frameworks with steel rather than lumber. Also, you can build closer to the ground. Taller structures are more vulnerable. In the case of tsunamis, you are more vulnerable the closer you are to the shore. High ground is obviously safer from a tsunami, although not necessarily safer from an earthquake. It is also true that no matter what precautions you may take, a sufficiently large earthquake (ten on the Richter scale) will still destroy any structure you can build. But there is no perfect safety, we can only do our best.

How do earthquakes affect property?

Earthquakes can cause significant damage to property. The shaking and ground displacement during an earthquake can result in structural damage to buildings, cracking of walls and foundations, and collapse of structures. Additionally, earthquakes can trigger landslides and tsunamis, which can cause further destruction to properties in affected areas.

What do earthquakes near Japan often cause?

Japan has a lot of earthquakes during the year. Most are small enough they can pretty much be ignored, but some are big enough to be felt, and rarely the are big enough to cause some damage. Earthquakes themselves in Japan do not cause much damage. Buildings are built to withstand even the strongest earthquakes. Direct damages to buildings could be cracks in walls ceilings and floors, and sometimes destruction of the house if the house is too old, or not built to withstand strong earthquakes. Indirect damages are the worst following an earthquake. They will include tsunami, landslides, fires. Power outages may follow. In public transportation systems such as train, earthquakes are usually detected before they arrive, so the operator has enough time to stop or slow the train down to prevent large accidents. This delays trains and screws schedules off, but they will not be in any serious physical damage, but if they are, they are usually derailments. Power outages will stop the whole train system until power is back.
