The same reason why Jews and Christians believe in 1 God.

When Prophet Adam came, and Islam was first created at the dawn of human kind, God always professed himself as one.

It's why the majority of Humans today on Earth are monotheistic.

There are philosophical proofs as to why this is true as well, but that should suffice.

What did Prophet Muhammad do to be an important person of Islam?

Muhammad (PBUH peace be upon him) is the 3rd prophet of the Abrahamic faiths including Christianity and Judaism. The Quran, Islamic holy book, was revealed to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the archangel Gabrael. Muslims view Muhammad (PBUH) simply as a prophet. They neither worship nor pray to him. They pray to God and God only. They do not believe God has any partners. They believe all humanity are God's children. God is referred to as Allah in Arab speaking countries because Allah is simply the Arabic word for "God." Even Christians and Jews living in Arab and Muslim countries call God Allah. Allah is not a separate or different God than that of Christians or Jews.

Which way should the star and crescent face when it's used to represent Islam?

They should not be displayed. They are not valid symbols of Islam - only a man-made thing that arose later on. I personally believe it is a Masonic symbol - like the all seeing eye. I despise the star and crescent. The only true symbol of Islam is the statement: Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah, Muhammad Rasool Allah. "There is no god but the One God (Allah) and Muhammad is the Messenger of God".
