Memory access times are measured in nanoseconds. But that is only part of the story. What exactly is the item you wish to access? Are you planning to access more that one item? Do you have control over how and where the items are stored? Are they in the cache when you want to access them. What are the details of the design of the memory you are accessing? For special problems data access can be sped up by using custom designs. What is you budget? Do you have access to a lab?
Does this help?
