Light is said to exhibit wave-particle duality because it is observed to behave as both a wave and a particle.

When we shine light into narrow slits, the phenomenon of interference occurs and leads us to believe that light behaves as a wave. On the other hand, if light is shone on a metal, the spray of electrons indicates light behaves as a particle. This is the dual nature (wave and particle) behaviour being referred to.

Light (ie, electromagnetic radiation) sometimes displays characteristics that can only be explained by viewing light as a particle, and other times it displays characteristics that can only be explained by viewing light as a wave.

Light is made up of 'virtual' particles called 'photons'. These photons are really packets of energy. But due to this dual wave-particle nature they sometimes act like particles and other times act like waves.

So... they are particles for the moment...

They can be entirely absorbed by arbitrarily small systems (if it hits a receptive atom the whole thing can be absorbed.)

But then they are waves...

They can be diffracted, reflected, etc.

Light can have both a particulate and a wave nature. At times, the wave nature is observed in experiments. For example, Young's double slit experiment showed that light can be experience interference, a phenomenon showed by waves.

On the other hand, there are times where the particulate nature of light is observed. Einstein explained the photoelectric effect using the particulate nature of light.

Dual nature and not dual particle nature

Dual nature means light behaves both as particles and as waves

In the lower energy region it behaves as waves and so the phenomena such as interference, diffraction, polarization could be explained based on this wave concept

But in higher energy level light could act as particle but not exactly particle but as photons which has energy content given by E = h v

With this photon or quantum concept photo electric emission could be explained

That is why we say light has dual nature.

The Most Common explanation for the nature of a photon is the wave-particle duality. It means that the photon is both a wave and particle at the same time. But acting as a wave at certain times and acting as a particle in certain times, shown by the double slit experiment

Another nature is that photons are massless and they travel at the speed of light which is approximately 3.00 x108m/s. But the speed of light changes according to what medium it is passing though
