Because he needed Stalin to win the war. Stalin was taking on an entire front more brutual than the one all the other countries were working to handle by themselves. Without Stalin, they would have lost.

Because my enemy's enemy is my friend.

Hitler had attacked Russia in June, 1941. Six months later Hitler also declared war on the US. This gave Stalin and Roosevelt a shared serious problem, of how to defeat Nazi Germany. Nobody in the US leadership liked Stalin very much and they had few illusions about the kind of person he was. Not everything he had done was yet known, as his despicable crimes were kept secret to the extent possible until after he died. But until Hitler could be done away with, the US leadership had to hold its nose and deal with Stalin as a partner in the effort.

The British were in the same position as the US in regard to Stalin. There had been few more outspoken harsh critics of the Russian communists before WWII than Winston Churchill. But Great Britain had spent a year, between the summer of 1940 and June of 1941, as the only nation at war with Germany. When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union this gave Great Britain an immediate powerful ally in the common cause against Germany. Churchill said at the time "If Hitler invaded hell, I should at least make a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons".

What did people call Joseph Stalin?

That Joseph Stalin was a brutal, murderous dictator can no longer be denied. The historical evidence is overwhelming.

Who was the dictatorial communist leader of russia during world war 2?

Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union during World War II and he picked up many facts about atomic weapons that Roosevelt, because of old age, let slip out. With that knowledge, the Soviet Union became a superpower in the Cold War with a huge Stockholm of nuclear weaponry and armaments. He helped the Soviet Union a lot, although the Soviet Union eventually went under. What Russia (as it's called today) has more than the US are nuclear submarines. That's pretty much all.

How far was the cold war caused by Truman hostility towards the soviet union?

Not at all, it was not the result of a trivial personalty clash. Stalin was an evil, brutal and dangerous dictator bent on violent aggression towards the free world (a brutal sppression of his own people). Stalin will forever be remembered as one of the world's most evil leaders (right up there with Hitler). Also the Cold War continued after Stalin died in 1953, and Truman left office in 1953. This is because the Soviets continued most of Stalin's international & military policies after his death. US President Reagan was correct when he called the Soviet Union an "evil empire".

Was Adolf Hitler the most brutal dictator in 20th century?

Actually, I would place this under a discussion, but I would say he was among the top 3. I would say the top three were Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot (Cambodia). I can give details about them all if you would like.

Was Mao's rule more brutal than that of Stalin or Hitler?

Yes, you could say that, as Mao was responsible for more deaths (largely through famine he caused) than Stalin or Hitler.
