In most cases, untreated rabies is fatal; but if an animal is treated in the early stage of the disease then they can recover. Some animals can be carriers of the disease and not become sick themselves but can spread the disease to others.

On your own without any medical assistence, No. Rabies takes hold of the brain and makes it go haywire. Such as fear of water and jumpiness. But with extreme medical help and if your quick to get to the doctors. They can hook you up to a mechine which turns the brain into a idle state so the rabies has nothing to affect, thus letting your anti-bodies do there jobs.

When a human gets rabies, they must be treated as soon as possible, so they cannot live with rabies. If the rabies is treated, then yes, they can still live a normal life.

Why do some bats have rabies and some don't?

In order to get rabies, an animal has to have been exposed to the disease, usually by being bitten or scratched by an infected animal. Most bats will not have rabies, as an animal that does get infected does not have long to live.

Why do rats carry rabies?

Rats not not always carry rabies, in fact most do not a an animal that has been infected does not have very long to live. Any mammal can carry rabies, but rats are among the more likely candidates as many rats can live in the same area, increasing potential for transmission form one animal to another.

Can monkey bite causes rabies?

A monkey bite can infect a human with rabies just the same as any other animal infected with it can. Monkeys are NOT born with rabies. They need to be bit by another infected animal. If a monkey has never been exposed to rabies then no, its bite will not "cause" rabies. If however, the monkey has been around another rabid animal and it was bit, it can infect another animal or person if it bites them. Note, rabies is deadly in monkeys just as it is in humans, so a monkey with rabies would not live very long anyway.Rabies is a neurotropic virus that can cause fatal disease in humans, it is transmitted to them by infective animals who have themselves contracted Rabies. A common infection route is established by a bite, or by saliva from an infected animal entering through a skin wound or lesion. At the outset it should be made clear that there is NO established evidence that any monkey has ever transmitted a Rabies infection to a human.

Can stray cats have rabies?

YES! There are very few animals that are not carriers of rabies. Raccoon's skunks, cats and dogs are all vectors for the rabies virus. Rabies can be passed from animal to animal through saliva, feces, and flesh wounds. People can also get rabies the same way. Animals often only live a few weeks at most when the contract rabies, so keep your distance from the stray cats until you are sure you have allowed a few weeks time to make sure they don't before interaction, quarantine works best during these few weeks.

How long can the rabies virus live outside the host?

When it comes to the rabies virus, it cannot live outside the body of the vector host for more than a few seconds. The moment the virus is put out of the salivary glands of the animal, the virus will die. Rabies is affected by temperature and moisture similar to other viruses. Aerosol transmission is exceptionally rare, though possible. Contamination of this type is almost exclusive to laboratory workers and people who handle infected animals. Rabies can not live independently in an aerosolized state and must be passed through contaminated fluids ejected into the air. An infected person or animal would have to spray a susceptible area (eyes, nose, open wound, etc.) with contaminated fluid thus passing the virus. However, in cases where an animal has succumbed to the rabies virus, the virus can continue to live in the animal for nearly 48 hours after death. That is why it is prudent not to touch dead animals that you find in the wild. Common animals that carry this virus include raccoons, groundhogs, opossums, bats and skunks.

Can a dog who has bitten a person and not transmitted rabies infect another person they bite later?

This question is rather confusing. However, if a dog is biting people this much, the dog needs attention of some kind. If a dog bites someone, there is probably a law in your area (if you are from the US) that it needs to be reported and then quarantined for ten days. That's the law in NYS where I live. This is to be certain the dog doesn't have rabies. My dog bit someone and even though we had proof that she had rabies vaccinations, we had to quarantine her for ten days. If your dog does not have rabies and is not vaccinated it will not catch rabies by biting a person unless the person the dog bit was carrying rabies, which is very, very unlikely. An animal catches rabies from other infected animals, from either getting scratched or bitten by that animal, or from eating a dead animal that had rabies. That's why it is so important to get your dog vaccinated every year.

Can a cat get rabies when they have had a rabies shot?

Rabies vaccinations in cats need to be renewed every 1 to 3 years. Your cat shouldn't contract rabies if they've been recently vaccinated. If you think your cat has been exposed to rabies, or can't remember when your cat was last vaccinated, call your vet ASAP. There is no cure or treatment for rabies in cats once symptoms occur, it's a fatal disease. It's also a disease that humans can contract. Unfortunately, there are no tests that definitively show if an animal has rabies except for a test that is performed on samples of the brain after the animal has died. This is why it's extremely important to keep up with your cat's rabies vaccinations.

Should a dog have a rabies booster shot when bitten by a coyote?

Because the rabies shot is a live virus, no. This could increase the rate of your dog getting sick from rabies. Get your dog tested, then if it has rabies, get it rabies injections.

How many days a man live after rabies is affected?

im no expert for rabies so DO NOT TAKE THIS EXTREMELY. After getting bite a grown dog, it will take 1~2 days(untill death). But dogs has a ver less chance of having rabies, so there is a great chance of that person not dying.

How are dogs effected from rabies?

Any animal with rabies will die. There is no treatment or cure. There is no way to test a live animal for rabies. Rabies is an extremely contagious and dangerous virus that will also kill people-if you suspect an animal is rabid,do not handle it. Call your local animal control to come and get it. Rabies has a wide range of symptoms-from extreme aggression to near catatonia. Make sure your dog is vaccinated and you will not have to worry.

How do you tell if a raccoon is rabid?

All Raccoons carry rabies in their feces (poo), but not all of them are actually infected with the disease and not all that have the disease are foaming at the mouth. So, if a Raccoon is acting strangely, back away slowly and call your local "Animal Hospital." All raccoons do not carry rabies, this is complete myth. You can suspect rabies if a raccoon seems unafraid of humans, is stumbling around, maybe walking in circles, or even falling over having seizures. They may be foaming at the mouth, or out in the daytime, but not all animals with rabies foam at the mouth, and not every raccoon you see in the daylight has rabies. Your best bet is to call your local wildlife control or even your local police station, and report your sighting, they will know who to call for the problem. Never try to approach a wild animal. Do not call an animal hospital, they have nothing to do with rabid wildlife

What is the percent of wild animals that have rabies?

Mice, while they can contract rabies, as all warmblooded mammals, can, it is extremely rare and hasn't been documented in the U.S. This is because rabies is transferred through a bite, and even if the mouse was bitten by an infected animal, it wouldn't live through that sort of attack. Even if it did, the virus would kill it before it had a chance to spread it.
