Whale vomit (technically called Ambergris) was once used as an ingredient in perfumes because of the earthy fragrance it aquires with age. It is rarely used in modern day perfumes and has been replaced by synthetic ingredients that produce the same scent.

Some species of whales have a thick waxy oil in their heads used for navigation called ambergris - which has a slightly stale flowery smell, used in perfumes. I believe it is still only used in Japan, Iceland and France. Its harvesting and export/import is highly regulated and restricted. Most modern perfumes use synthetics instead of whale vomit.

no.

Ambergris is used in the making of perfume. It is a waxy like substance discarded from sperm whale's vomit. Initially, the substance has a foul fecal odor to it. With time, the substance develops a sweeter aroma, more suitable for perfumes.

Sometime during the 70's there was an international moratorium placed on ambergris and it's derivatives (perfume, etc) due to it's association with sperm whales. However, since 2005 ambergris which is ethically harvested (along beaches usually) has been used commercially.

Ambergris is a whale product that is still used in the manufacture of perfume.

It is produced naturally in the whale and regurgitated. It is used as a fixative in perfume, but synthetic products have now largely displaced it. Still found on beaches occasionally, and there is a market for it.

Why were whales hunted in the 1800s?

The whole whale had some economical value. The meat was considered low value and went for dog food and such. The hide was water proof material. Whale bone was decorative and constructive material. Whale oil was used for street lights and lamps in general. The single most valuable part however was whale vomit which had applications as a perfume.
