"...all oats do contain gluten, but it's not that simple. See, oats naturally contain a type of gluten called Avenin that is different to the type of gluten you find in wheat, rye, barley and triticale.

Now if you talk to the Coeliac Society of Australia, they say about 4 in 5 people with Coeliac Disease can tolerate oats. We say the easiest thing to do is read the Coeliac Society position statement on oats and seek medical advice on whether this applies to you."

The safety of oats for patients with celiac disease depends on the variety of oat - some are more toxic than others. The method used to assess this can be applied to other foods to determine their toxicity as well.
Oats do not contain gluten, the problem is most oats are cut on the same mill as other grains that do. Unless it states gluten free on the oatmeal or regular cut oats stay away.

Yes. Most Likely, all Oats and oatmeal do. Make sure they say "Gluten-Free" . You can buy Gluten-Free Oats...available at most Health food stores. People on Gluten free diets tend to not get as much fiber in there diets. But, there are a lot of grains out there, made by "Bob's Redmill" . I mix them in and make muffins. You can Mix in Gluten free Flax seeds, GF Oats, Quinoa to a Gluten Biscuit mix and make all kinds of pancakes, muffins and breads. Have fun!

Oats do not contain any gluten, however they do contain avenin, which a an oat protein that performs the same function as gluten in the plant. Almost everyone who has a gluten intolerance also has an avenin intolerance, with the exception of various tribes throughout the world who historically exclusively raised oats instead of wheat, normally due to climate, who now have an avenin tolerance while remaining sensitive to gluten.

Grains, oats included, are just generally very unhealthy and should only be eaten as a dessert anyways.

Oats contain a protein very similar to gluten; however, many of those with celiac do not react to this- based on sensitivity. Also, many oats are processed WITH wheat, so it is best to avoid oats unless you an be 100% certain they are not processed with wheat, rye, barley, or any other gluten containing crop.

This is a highly disputed question. Oats are not considered to contain gluten, but almost all oats are grown with wheat, which means that there is a huge possibility for cross-contamination. Therefore, the majority of oat products are considered to contain gluten. However, oats that are grown totally isolated from wheat and other glutenous grains are considered to be gluten free. McCann's Irish Oats are a great example of gluten free oats available in many grocery stores.

Although gluten is not part of the ingredients, there is the possibility that oats could contain trace amounts of gluten from wheat, rye and barley. This can occur if the oats are grown in fields or transported in vehicles that once contained these other grains.
