There is every hope. Don't ever allow them to spend ANY time alone with the narcissist and protect them from their criticisms and reaffirm their self worth and value if the Narcissist gets to them. if things get bad, just stop taking the children. Their emotional, psychological and mental protection is paramount.

Does a narcissist stop caring about their children after a certain age?

Not a fixed age, but narcissists tend not to care about people who don't make them feel better about themselves. Children depend on their parents for their own needs, which can get in the way of a self-interested person and their feelings. This is very unfortunate, for such children.

Who is a widow's next of kin?

That depends on whether or not they have any children, grandchildren, siblings, or if their parents are still living. If they have children, then the children are the next of kin. If they had children and the children are deceased, yet had children of their own, then the grandchildren would be the next of kin. If there are no grandchildren either, then the parents are next of kin. If the parents are deceased, then the siblings would be next of kin. If they have no children, grandchildren, siblings or surviving parents or grandparents, then the closest blood relatives would be their next of kin, such as aunts and uncles, cousins, etc. in that order.

Your children are the parents of some of your grandchildren. They are also the aunts or uncles of those of your grandchildren who are not their children. Even you have a child who is younger than one of your grandchildren, that child is still the aunt or uncle of all those grandchildren.

Can a narcissist be a good father?

In order to be a good father you always have to put your child's well-being first. that said there is no saying that a narcissist can't LEARN to be a good father. Clinically-defined narcissists (people with a personality disorder) may be good parents to the extent that 'being a good parent' is part of their self-image. However, people who are clinically-definable as narcissists are rare; people who are merely self-centered can and do make excellent parents.

Is it common for a narcissist to be totally supported by their parents and never really work?

Yes! Parents that allow their children to take on no responsibility or pay for their consequences create a monster. It is up to every parent to instill right and wrong and to give their children self-worth and it shouldn't always be done by telling the child what they have done wrong, but teach how to rectify it and also laughter along with it can help. Parents of a narcissist often spoil the child and studies show that many narcissists were an only child. In these modern times many parents both work and feel guilty so provide "things" such as credit cards, gifts, trips rather than giving their child the much needed guidance they deserve. And thus, a narcissist can be born!

Are narcissistic people born narcissistic?

No. It develops in children who's parents give them too much attention unnecessarily, and treat them like they are God's gift to the world. Commonly the parents are narcissistic too. It is not genetic and can be prevented if one of the child's parents are not narcissistic and give them a somewhat normal childhood. Contrary to the above answer, scientists have conducted research that shows the narcissists brains are different. Shown images that would cause shock, horror and distaste to most humans, Narcissists have no reaction to these horrific images, in fact the frontal lobe is where we process emotional content and moral conscious decisions. This part of the brain is non operational in a narcissist, and can be genetic. Which can account for the narcissist coming from a well balanced, honest, and kind upbringing. Also a genetic narcissist can be born into a deviate family which creates the possibilities for a true monster.
