As far as I can tell from my internet research, there is no poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) in the Philippines. However there are far more dangerous plants there such as the Stinger (Dendrocnide Moroides), the Poison Arrow Tree (Antiaris Toxicaria), the Cashew Tree (Anacardium occidentale), and even the Mango Tree (Mangifera spp.).
There are lots of poisonous snakes in the Philippines (but the correct term is venomous not poisonous since poison is something inhaled or ingested while venom is something injected). Generally all snakes are venomous, but they are less potent in snakes considered non-venomous. Venom is very important in snakes because they use it to immobilize prey so they can eat. Without venom, it is difficult for them to catch prey since they don't have limbs to hold their prey. However, larger snakes, like the python, use body strength rather than venom (since it is classified non-venomous) to subdue prey by constricting and suffocating them to death. The Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus), which is the longest snake in the world can also be found in the Philippines, including the longest venomous snake in the world which is the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah).
There are 3 notable families of venomous snakes in the world and the Philippines has all of them. These are the Elapids(cobra, banded sea kriat, etc.), Viperids (waggler's pit viper, vine snake, etc.) and Colubrids. Colubrids are the most abundant in the family of snakes, and most species under this family have weak venom desinged to kill only smaller prey. Therefore they are considered harmless to humans. Colubrids are also opistoglyphous. This means their fangs are located at the rear end of their upper jaw and not in front. (contributed by Ranoray Love A. Noro)
Yes, there are. In fact, the Philippine Cobra is the most toxic of all cobra species, and in Discovery's list of top ten most dangerous snakes, it is number three.
Aside from the cobra, there are many other snakes that have venom, but are not so deadly. I'm no expert, but I have encountered a couple which, according to the locals of the area, are better left alone. As all snakes are, I believe.
there are 120 species of snakes in the philippines(updated year 2011, after discovering 6 more species i think), 20 of it is considered venomous. to be sure, pls. visit or call, the national museum of the philippines.(reptiles dept.). thanks a lot
Although most of the snake species of the Philippines are harmless, it is also the home of some of the deadliest snakes in the world.
