Installing a check valve in the pipe entering the pump will help greatly in retaining the prime on a pump above the water level. You can see an example of a good check valve at http://www.everything4pools.com/products/174/2287.html.
Relocate the pump to a more suitable location - less than 4' - preferably at water level or close to it.
a pump should not need to be primed very few times if all is working properly. You could have air getting in somewhere. But to prime take a waterhose and stick in your return line at skimmer and hold a rag around to create blockage. make sure the pump does not suck in the rag
