This shouldn't discourage you from playing, however. It is a very fun game and the perspective from an ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) and the storyline employed are quite intriguing.

Real Answer - Yes Master Cheif is in fact In Halo Reach , But He's Wearing the Mark V Armor. Because After Reach is Halo :Combat Evolved. He only wears Mark V . the Mark VI armor is in halo 2 and 3. not CE

But the seige on Reach was directly before Halo.Captain Keyes launches the Pillar Of Autumn into slipspace, and finds Halo.Before orders to return to the Autumn, Master Chief was under heavy fire, and his teamate Kelly was shot by a plasma blast. When Kelly was returned to the hospital, she died of bleeding out. Then the Master Chief was the LAST SPARTAN.Yet the Master Chief is not dead, he is still in the reck of the Dawn. He entered the cryo tube to perserve his life. How the Arbiter returned was that half of the Dawn was because the slipspace cut off half of the ship.

So yes he is alive . If you play it on Legendary it will show the ship :Forward Unto Dawn coming to a Forerunner planet. He is in Halo 4. The Halo 4 trailer shows the frigate flying to a portal.
We don't know yet. But he'll probably will be. At the legendary ending of Halo 3 he is seen drifting to an unknown planet on a half of the frigate, Forward Unto Dawn, so he'll probably be in Halo 4 being seen climbing out of cryo-sleep, like the beginning of Halo CE. And why would they leave fans with a cliffhanger and never answer it? So we could say Master chief is probablyin Halo 4.

there is an easter egg in reach, before the mission lone wolf. in the last cut scene when commander keis's pelican flies into the pilar of autumn if you hold your joystick to the right the screen will turn and you will see master cheif sleeping.

Master Chief was woken from Cryogenic Sleep by Cortana, and he got sucked into the Forerunner world of Requiem. He crash landed and that is also how he saw the UNSC Infinity crash land on the same world.
