Yes it can. The US already has a considerable amount of socialist policies now with institutions such as public libraries and public schools. There are many other democracies that are far more socialist. Democracy allows people to collectively govern a nation's resources, and communal ownership is the underlying principal of socialism.
The US is not headed toward socialism anytime soon as a result of any political pressures or policies.
There is no serious movement in the US to remove private ownership of the means of production, resources, and to replace the profit system with a system of economic planning, public ownership or co-operatives.

Socialism is a political theory, and the US is a nation, so they are not terribly similar. I will note that the US has been socialist to at least some degree, since the New Deal of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, going back to the 1930's. But the US uses some elements of socialism and some elements of the free market, as it sees fit.
