Puns, alliteration, repetition, slapstick, so easily distracted by the clothing, dynamic of bickering children, really desperate for alcohol, Stephano thinks he's incharge, Ariel saying thou liest, Caliban insulting Trinculo, irony and sarcasm. There were some more but I can't think of them now...

Romeo and Juliet is an intensely sad and tragic story, even if it has somewhat amusing spots. It can only be made into a comedy by violating the story line to death. This might be done in one of several ways.

1. Applying the name to a completely unrelated happy romance plot. This is the equivalent of presenting a song called "Hey Jude" with no actual Beatles music in it. See Gnomeo and Juliet.

2. Satirizing or making fun of the play. The Canadian comedians Wayne and Schuster did this with the tragedy Julius Caesar, turning it into the ridiculous skit "Wipe the Blood off my Toga"

3. Performing the play so badly that it is funny. Shakespeare himself did this with a plot extremely similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. In the play A Midsummer Night's Dream, a group of amateur actors put on a play called Pyramus and Thisbe, which is meant to be tragic but is so bad it's hilariously great.

None of the characters die, there is a betrothal at the end, and there is some humour (for example when Stephano and Trinculo are drinking, and through the spirits, such as Ariel).

Shakespeare wrote The Tempest for the same reason he wrote his other plays--to make money.
