Whether or not you can swear in public legally is a matter of state law. Some states still have laws on their books that make this practice illegal, although it is seldom enforced. It is not considered polite to do this, however.

There is not a specific law preventing swearing in public.

Most people who swear in public are prosecuted under section 5 Public order act 1985 which states that a person is guilty of the offence if he engages in disorderly behaviour or displaying any sign or written material or conduct likely to cause harassment alarm or distress in a public place.

In 1551, the Scottish Parliament banned "sweiring, execrationnis and blasphematioun of the name of God", and if one did so, you would be fined a shilling and if you could not pay, you would spend time in prison or the stocks.

Swearing is not illegal unless you are breaking some sort of rule or policy like swearing in court can cause you contempt of court. You cannot swear in threatening manner either but you can call a cop whatever you want and cuss him out as long as you do not threaten him. It's your freedom of speech

There actually are some places that have laws against public profanity. You would need to check local and even state laws.

Yes, it is usually included under the Disorderly Conduct, or other such "public order' statutes.

Like a lot of things in the law . . . . it depends. It is not subject to a yes or no answer. What are the circumstances?

It is in many places in the US and the rest of the World. It is seldom enforced, though there was a successful prosecution in Michigan a few years back.
