∙ 13y agoUntreated depression is the number one cause for suicide. 80% of depressed people are not currently having any treatment. Unfortunately, many people do not receive treatment for depression, and are consequently at risk for suicide.
Depression isn't being in a bad mood or having a few bad days - depression is NOT something a person can 'snap out of' - depression is not something to be ashamed of -but is an illness that can be camouflaged and misdiagnosed.
Suicide is NOT a good choice because - as with most other illnesses - depression can be effectively treated. It's not easy, it doesn't happen over night, and few of us can overcome it without professional help. It is NOT 'all in your head' nor does it respond to 'cheer up!'
Professional therapy, medication, and other life-changes can help people who suffer from depression. That, in turn, helps to overcome the hopelessness that leads to many suicides.
Sometimes suicide feels like it's the right choice or the only choice - but that is not true. With the death of every person who dies by suicide, a trauma is inflicted on loved ones, friends, co-workers, and even complete strangers. Suicide leaves a sad trail of victims behind it: guilt, anger, fear, questions, hopelessness, "why, why, why" and "Why didn't I realize s/he felt so bad?"
The good choice is finding the right treatment and working hard to fight the depression. Suicide may feel like the only answer, but it's not true. The perception of hopelessness might feel true, but there is a better way. Treatment is the good choice.

∙ 11y agoNot ever. Suicide is like giving up. It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem; because no matter what situation you are in, it'll always get better.
If you or a loved one is contemplating suicide, you need to get help. Go online for crisis chat rooms or get a therapist. No one should ever feel down enough to commit suicide, but it happens.

"Suicide is not chosen; it happenswhen pain exceedsresources for coping with pain."You can survive suicidal feelings if you do either of two things:
- Find a way to reduce your pain. OR
- Find a way to increase your coping resources. Both are possible.
Remember that feelings and actions are two different things - just because you feel like killing yourself, doesn't mean that you have to actually do it right this minute. Put some distance between your suicidal feelings and suicidal action.
