The SATs are not compulsory. Some universities and colleges require SAT scores (mostly American and Canadian); Many others do not. It would be a good idea to check with the universities you are applying to in order to get specific information.
Here's the good news - you don't have to take the SAT to graduate from high school! However, if your goal is to attend a four-year college or university, the SAT is going to be an important part of your application. Nearly every four-year school in the country requires either the SAT or the ACT for admissions, and many also ask for the SAT subject tests. As you begin your college search, take some time to learn about each school's requirements.
Most colleges require you to take either the SAT or the ACT, but some, like Sarah Lawrence College and Muhlenberg College allow you to submit a piece of analytical writing instead of standardized test scores.
If they have no desire to go to college, the SAT is not mandatory. No state has passed a law requiring students to take a test from a private entity. Even college bound can take the ACT if they wish, different schools look at different test scores. Not taking the tests pretty much eliminates the ability to get into most colleges and universities.
Yes, when you're 16 you can chose to carry on to college/sixth form or not (most people who chose not to go to college/sixth form look for a job instead)
Colleges use applicants' SAT scores to determine whether to accept them or not; so if you want to apply for colleges you need to either do the SAT or the ACT.
For most universities you need a SAT of 1400 or more to be accepted.
