a straight Chlorine pool is easy and does not cost much to start with.

Salt (Sodium chloride) water pools are also chlorine pools but they use the salt in the pool to make chlorine using an electrode designed to do that job. however the water can not be reused when back washing the filtration system.

Salt (Magnesium chloride and potassium chloride) work like a normal salt pool only the salt is not harmful and can be beneficial to swimmers as well as the back wash being good for plants in the yard so no water need go to waste.

Ozone requires special equipment but is reputed to be a very good sanitation method without the irritating effects of chlorine.

Salt water pools are chlorine pools, the difference is that a fresh water pool has chlorineadded by the operator, while a salt water pool has a chlorine generator that electronically creates chlorine while the filtration system is running I does this by separating chlorine gas out of the salt in the water and dissolving it back into the water. most salt water chlorinator pools use common salt or sodium chloride, which is the same as the salt found in sea water, only at a much lower concentration. A new system is available now that that uses magnesium chloride and sodium chloride, the advantage with this is that it is not harmful to use the backwash for watering the garden and it has a therapeutic effect on swimmers.

Yes, you can. We have a pool in Crete that uses salinated water. You need a special system that converts some of the salt into chlorine. This means that the water is much less chlorinated than most standard pools. Our system has worked really well through one complete season with temperatures in the high 30's (Centigrade!). You still need the chlorine to some extent as this is the fungicide.

I do not think it appropriate here to push one system over any others, but our originates in Australia, and works really well.
