Rugby League split from Union in 1895. Although superficially similar (the aims in both sports being to score a try or goal) the play and most of the rules are completely different and too numerous to list in full. Some key differences are:
RL = 13 players, RU = 15 players
RL = Limited to 6 tackles (equivalent to a 'down' in American Football), played backwards with foot. RU = after a tackle ball is released and can be retained perpetually.
RL try = 4 points, RU try = 5 points
RL drop goal = 1 point, RU = 3 points
RL penalty = 2 points, RU = 3 points
RL restart when ball crosses sideline = scrum, RU restart = lineout
