Saltwater would kill a tetra fish! I think they are all freshwater fish and putting a freshwater fish in saltwater is a very, very bad idea.

By putting salt in their (dirty) water, they killed some of the bacteria, and their fish got sick less often. Hence, the belief that putting salt in a freshwater aquarium on a permanent basis is a good idea. There is no reason to put salt in with these fish unless you're trying to treat a specific illness. Plecos in particular do not handle salt well at all, so it might be a better idea to try a remedy made specifically for their condition, if they are ill.
