It is never too late to teach an old dog new tricks! If you adopt an adult or even a senior dog, you may be amazed at their ability to concentrate and learn new things.

Adult dogs are often even easier to train than pups, simply because they have the ability to focus for a longer period of time.

Other contributors have said:
  • With patience, yes, you can. A dog treated well is loyal and it will always do its best to please its owner.
  • Dogs can continue to learn at any age.
  • Take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself that question! Yes, sometimes you can teach an old dog new tricks as long as they aren't too complicated. Teach the dog to pray (paws across the muzzle, head down.) Don't expect a very old dog to jump through hoops.
  • Why change something that doesn't need fixing. Your dog was fine as he/she is, so I wouldn't bother teaching the dog new tricks and just have fun with the dog and enjoy it while you still have it.
  • You can teach seniors fetch and stuff, but an adult would be easier for complicated tricks for an adult not senior. So yes and no but mostly no.

Actually you can. Some dogs just get too lazy to learn tricks, that's why some people believe that phrase. I have a 7 year old dog with another 6 to 7 years to go, and I taught him a new trick within 2 days! He perfected it, and many people consider him old.

It means when someone is old it is difficult for them to learn anything new and can't change their ways. It doesn't really carry over to dogs as dogs can learn tricks at any age so it is only symbolic and applicable to humans.

"You can't teach an old dog new tricks" means that you can't teach older people new, modern, things. I do not agree with that but you might! I am only 11 and I did that in school.
