Yes. From 1933 onwards (when the Nazis came to power) many Jews tried to leave Germany, but they needed somewhere (and if possible, also a job) to go to. Immigration to the U.S., Britain and most other countries was very strictly controlled, and usually refugees had to have financial guarantees (from relatives or charities) within these countries, so that they 'would not become a burden'. Different countries had, of course, different rules. Between 1933 and 1941 the U.S. admitted about 250,000 refugees from Germany and Austria; between 1933 and 1939 Britain admitted 71,000, Australia about 50,000, Canada only 5,000 (!!), New Zeland fewer than 1,000 ... (These figures are for all refugees from Germany and Austria, and therefore include political refugees, many of whom were not Jewish). The situation was desperate. What rumors went round about Adolf Hitler?

Well, there were rumors a geneologist concluded. He apparently traced Hitler's family tree to a name that stunned people. The name was Salmon ((a Jewish name)). And so there was a building that could prove that Hitler was indeed part Jewish, Hitler burned it to the ground in case the rumor was true (( and if it turned out to be true, just imagine how his power would die slowly and someone else would take control, and for being Jewish, HE would have to go to a concentrion camp!))There is indeed another rumor in which he hated Jewish people because he had a Jewish wife who had left him for another Jew. ((The first rumor was on the History Channel and the second is known in certain books))

What role did the average German play in the Holocaust?

Hitler was the driving force behind the Holocaust. He ranted and raved like crazy against the Jews, calling them traitors, Communists and all sorts of other things designed to make them hated. His willing brown-nosed henchmen and lackeys then got on with it. He played a role in giving some of the orders, approving plans and so on. (Obviously, nobody suggests that he personally turned on gas taps with his own hands). His exact role in the Holocaust is not altogether clear, however.

What is your understanding of the cold war?

The cold war was a time in which the Soviet Union who are known now as Russia began dominating countries and changing them into Communist. It was a time in which things fall apart in Europe because countries turned against each other, people died children and Parent lost each other and people have to decide either to be a Communist or Capitalism.
