At its most basic, being "hypnotized" is simply being in a mental state where your concentration is highly focused on something (eg reading, watching a movie, listening to music, undertaking a task requiring intense concentration etc) to the exclusion of all else. So, someone who is "lost in a book", or "daydreaming", or fascinated by someone/ something, is in a state of hypnosis.
When about to fall asleep, you are hypnotized - you can not go to sleep without being in this state.
