I recently made an enquiry to Heinz regarding their tomato ketchup and this was their response:
Dear Raja
Thank you for your recent communication regarding spirit vinegar and alcohol used in our products.
Spirit vinegar is made by the fermentation of diluted distilled alcohol. The alcohol is made from either barley or other grain. The alcohol is then fermented to form acetic acid and this is called spirit vinegar. Whilst virtually all of the alcohol will be fermented, and evaporated off as part of our own manufacturing process, and although spirit vinegar is only used in small amounts in a few of our recipes we cannot guarantee that some minute traces of alcohol could conceivable remain.
If you want to avoid alcohol in your diet on medical or religious grounds then we advise that you seek further advice from your medical doctor or religious leaders.
Yours sincerely
