Answer: Probably.

The FAA mandates very strict guidelines pertaining to the operation, maintenance and repair of all aircraft, including privately owned and operated aircraft. So long as these laws are followed to the letter the aircraft should be perfectly safe to fly in.

That being said, there are private aircraft owners out there who do skirt the regulations. However it is very uncommon.

If there is any doubt, check it out. The tail number of any aircraft can be looked up online to find out who the owner is, and you can then research or even contact that owner to ask questions. Also all aircraft should have the FAA-issued Airworthiness certificate displayed somewhere in the cockpit, ask the pilot for it and make sure it is up-to-date. Airworthiness certificates cannot be issued to aircraft which have not been properly maintained and documented. Even airliners must have this Airworthiness certificate.

Ask to see it, and if its not available, dont fly with them!

Additionally, most pilots are very familiar with people who are reluctant to fly. Discuss your misgivings with them and most will be perfectly happy to walk you through the preflight inspection and/or discuss the history of the aircraft youll be flying in.
