Aggregate is the gravel or stone in the concrete. It is what gives concrete it's strength. Think of the aggregate as the bricks of a wall and the concrete and sand as the mortar.

Is concrete a compound an element or a mixture?

Concrete is a composite construction material, composed of cement (commonly Portland cement) and other cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate (generally a coarse aggregate made of gravel or crushed rocks such as limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand), water and chemical admixtures.

What does concreteness mean?

Concrete is a well proportioned mixture of cement and other cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, coarse aggregate made of crushed stone, fine aggregate such as sand, water, and chemical admixtures. The more inclusive answer is that concrete is a matrix of stone/sand aggregate adhered into a mass with a binding agent like Portland Cement or hot asphalt oil. This can refer to a person: He was as solid as concrete and would not move off his position.

Explain how aggregates are processed for the use as a Portland cement concrete ingredient or as a bituminous concrete ingredient?

There is nothing special about the aggregate, it is simply crushed rock that has been washed.

What is the most important ingredient of concrete?

Usually the sand and aggregate (filler stone) is the largest percentage of concrete, however from a chemistry standpoint the cement is, by far, the most important ingredient.

Why pouring concrete onto a driveway and allowing it to set a chemical change?

allowing concrete to set is a chemical reaction where the Portland cement goes from a liquid slurry between the rocks and sand in the concrete (called aggregate) to a crystalline medium that bonds the aggregate together as an artificial mineral. In addition to radically changing the physical properties of the concrete (from a runny goo to a solid surface) the process also gives off a significant amount of heat and isn't easily reversible.

What was roman concrete made out of?

Roman concrete consisted of the same basic elements as present day concrete which is an aggregate and a binder. For the aggregate the Romans used pulverized rubble, broken tiles and rock. A volcanic debris called "pit sand" was also used. For the binder, gypsum and lime was used.

Is concrete a plastic?

No. Concrete is made up mostly of aggregate.

How the changing of workability when the concrete mixture containing high aggregate content?

Aggregate to cement ratio is an important thing which affects the workability....! If the aggregate/cement ratio is higher , the concrete will be Leaner. Less quantity of paste is available for lubrication, Hence workability decreases..!! On the other hand if the aggregate/cement ratio is lower, the concrete will be fatty. Higher quantity of paste is available for lubrication. Hence workability increases. ! Thus Higher aggregate content leads to lowering of workability....!

Should a sidewalk be made of cement or concrete?

Concrete is what you make a sidewalk from. To make concrete, you mix Portland cement, sand, gravel (aggregate) and water. The cement holds the aggregate together.

Is concrete a polymer?

Polymer concrete is a composite material which results from polymerization of a monomer/aggregate mixture. The resulting polymer binds the aggregate making the concrete stronger than ordinary concrete using just standard aggregate.

Does sizes of aggregates affect the compressive strength of concrete?

Larger the size of aggregate will decrease strength of the concrete because surface area of this aggregate is low.Lesser the size of the aggregate will lead to increase the strength of the concrete.Well graded aggregate have all size of particles hence particle interferance is neglected, thus strength of concrete is more.
