Depending on your vehicle, there are alternatives to a load resistor.
You should use the same type five-pin flasher unit so you don't lose safety features.
I put LED lights in my 2002 LTD Cruiser. License plate lights, Rear tail/brake lights, 3rd brake lights and rear turn signals. I was getting the same rapid flash because of the low voltage demand by the LEDs.
I actually liked it, but I have learned that in some states it can be illegal, like having an actual burnt out bulb. But I found a recommended replacement for the flasher unit (Which is under the upper steering column cover, BTW).
The stock unit is an OMRON 0661A2.
I replaced it with a Tridon Lighting Control Module: LM470 ($29.99 @ AutoZone).
It works perfectly. The audible clicker is a little louder, but it is a bit tinny.
The LM470 says it's LED compatible and should work with various Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Plymouth vehicles from 1995 to 2006.
This is better than a load resistor as there is no change to the harness, it is a stock replacement, and it is backward compatible if you want to go back to incandescents, but who would want to do that. ;-)
Necessary, no. Recommended, yes.

With mine, the rough idle was fixed by changing the spark plug wires.
There is a "reset" function in the Chrysler scan tool.
Tuning up a Chrysler PT Cruiser can be done at home or by a mechanic. A tune up will consist of an oil change, changing the spark plugs and wires, air filter, and distributor cap.
Installed the battery backward. A short. Or a fuse blew.
Changing a battery on a 2006 PT Cruiser is very simple to do. The battery terminal cables will need to be taken off and put to the side. After the cables are off, take the battery off and replace it with a new one.
Cruiser bruiser.
