The democrat believes in freedom of assembly so people can get together to discuss or to protest government policy. The democrat believes in freedom of association, which means that the people can be associated with any person or with any group. A democrat does not ban groups or deny the freedom of groups to meet.

A communist does not believe in freedom of the press and will not tolerate competing visions of government. A communist does not believe in freedom of association and will deny groups the right to meet or exist. They take these positions because they believe that the press, association, competing parties and other freedoms are tools of class. The seek to reduce or eliminate class differences universally in order to promote the concept of equality in the population. They believe class distinctions promote inequality.

A democrat recognizes that class is not the defining feature of political and economic freedom. Whether class distinctions come and go to effect political or economic policies in not the end of the world and is manageable within the freedoms of their country. As long as their citizens are free to embrace whatever political ideals they feel are appropriate the nation will prosper. Close down those freedoms and the nation will falter.
