Harper Lee and Gen. Robert E. Lee are very distantly related to each other, however it is not through the Lee family like you might think. Harper Lee's connection to General Lee is through her mother Frances Cunningham Finch and General Lee's connection is through his mother Anne Hill Carter. They are 14th cousins 4 times removed through their common ancestor of Hugh de Stafford. Robert E. Lee's line of Lees trace back through Virginia and previously to Worcestershire, England. Harper Lee's line of Lees trace back to South Carolina. Any connection between the two Lee families is unlikely but possible.

Although Harper Lee has many distant cousin relationships to famous people including royalty (she is the 6th cousin 15 times removed to King Henry VIII), she has some rather interesting family connections through her 5th great-grandfather Capt. Thomas Jefferson. Through Capt. Jefferson she is a first cousin 5 times removed to President Thomas Jefferson, a fifth cousin 1 time removed to Edith (Bolling) Wilson, wife and first lady of President Woodrow Wilson, and a 6th cousin 2 times removed to movie actress Jennifer Lawrence.
