On June 28, 1979, Philippe Cousteau Sr. [b. December 30, 1940] died when his seaplane crashed into the Tagus River near Lisbon, Portugal. Philippe was the son of famed oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau [June 11, 1910-June 25, 1997] and of Simone Melchior Cousteau [January 19, 1919-1990], the first woman scuba diver. Philippe was testing a repair on the family's Catalina PBY seaplane. The Catalina turned upside down, the fuselage broke behind the cockpit, and then the left propeller cut through the cockpit, killing Philippe.Philippe's widow Jan remembers that it took two days to locate the wreckage. An at-sea burial was held in his memory. Jan never has remarried. Their daughter Alexandra [b. March 21, 1976] was three years old. Their son, Philippe Cousteau, Jr., was born six months later on January 20, 1980.
