Some Grand Rapids made furniture is quite valuable, depending on who designed it, etc.

George Nakashima designed some modern furniture for the John Widdicomb company in Grand Rapids which is quite valuable. A pair of side tables sold for $2,000 each. Anything associated with Nakashima is likely to have value.

But, there was a lot of variety of design and craftsmanship that came out of this area. Some bad, some pretty good. Baker Furniture prior to the time Kohler bought the company is good, some is great. Anything by Baker from 1943 until about 1985 is very likely to be good. After 2000 it is all mediocre to poor. They make some in Indonesia which is very poor. But from 43 until about 1990 the company had terrific design standards, selected the best veneers from around the world and had extraordinary craftsmen.

Some Herman Miller pieces, such as the Eaames Lounge Chair are quite valuable. This was actually made in Holland and Zeeland, Michigan.

In summary, the value depends on who, what and when.

Widdicomb and John Widdicomb (two different companies) are good brands that are no longer made.

Is a numbered two tier table made by Imperial Furniture Company of Grand Rapids Michigan valuable?

Nearly all of the old name furniture manufacturers in GR had very valuable pieces. Stow & Davis, Widdicome and John Widdicome, Kendall, Baker, Burphy & Gay, and Imperial were some of the plank-owners in the furniture industry of Grand Rapids. But, as with all valuable collectibles, it depends heavily on many variables: condition, age, restoration, patina are just a few. Contact the curator at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (see the link below) with inffo and photos for further help.

Does H E Shaw Furniture Company Grand Rapids Michigan still exist?

The H.E. Shaw furniture company in Grand Rapids Michigan was operated from1911-1933.Depletion of Michigan's forests put an end to the logging industry, requiring furniture companies to import lumber, as they still do today. Due to a nationwide industry slump between 1905 and 1910, furniture workers received only minimal raises or none at all. This, combined with extremely long hours and poor working conditions, led to 3,000 workers striking in 1911 demanding a 9-hour day, a 10 percent wage increase, and the abolition of pay based on piecework. After four months, the strike ended, but later management granted most of the laborer's requests. The Grand Rapids residential furniture industry never fully recovered after that strike. World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II led to lessening demand for residential furniture and the Grand Rapids furniture companies did not make the transition well during the war economies. Many companies went under or moved south to be closer to a larger lumber supply.
