Although Bernie Sanders describes himself as a "democratic socialist" his current political positions would more accurately be described as "social democracy".

Socialism is an economic system based on the social ownership of the means of production, meaning the economic surplus generated by productive property accrues to society as opposed to a class of private owners. More fundamentally, in its comprehensive definition, socialism implies advocacy for a post-capitalist economic system that is characterized by a different set of economic dynamics than those of capitalism (the accumulation of capital and the profit system). This is what classic socialist thinkers like Eugene V. Debs and Karl Marx meant by socialism.

Contemporary social democracy, on the other hand, is not defined as an economic system but as a set of policies that aim to enhance equality of opportunity for all people to succeed within a capitalist market economy. This typically implies state interventionism to promote greater equity in the distribution of income, universal access to basic social welfare services, and collective bargaining arrangements that give workers a voice in shaping labor market policy. Social democracy is typically used to describe the social model of the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, etc.), which Bernie Sanders has cited as his definition of "democratic socialism".

Bernie Sanders does not question the legitimacy of the capitalist system (the accumulation of capital and the profit system) or the division between owners and workers (private ownership and the system of wage labor), nor do any of his policies aim to transcend or replace the capitalist system in favor of some form of social ownership of the economy. At most he can be described as a "social democrat" or "progressive populist" who believes that the real issues of modern society can be solved by reforming capitalism rather than by abolishing it.

Despite his self-description as a socialist, and the continued pushing of this idea by the media, Bernie Sanders is not a socialist.

A socialist is someone who advocates the replacement of capitalism with socialism, be it through reformist or revolutionary methods. Bernie Sanders advocates for a capitalist society with better services for the people such as healthcare and welfare, and is also an advocate of the 'Nordic model' employed by countries like Sweden, Norway etc. This is actually social democracy, not socialism, as it is still fundamentally a capitalist system.

Bernie Sanders is a social democrat, but not a socialist.

Senator Bernie Sanders is indeed self proclaimed socialist. Some citizens are not aware that being a socialist and having the ideals that lay within that broad political area, are simply uninformed and this is not a criticism. Senator Sanders has no hidden plans to "collectivize" US agriculture. In the UK for example, the Labor party is for all practical purposes a socialist party, however. And it's a big "however". The Labor Party is not for example, in favor of nationalizing various industries that work better as private corporations. Many formerly nationalized industries have been "privatized" for logical reasons. And, as another example, Holland of France, is also a socialist, however, he is not there to nationalize Renault.

By the same token, US presidents can be classified as "capitalists" ( better said mixed economy supporters ) however, no one at the US national level, or local levels, is planning on privatizing VA hospitals. Nor have any free market politicians advocated the end of child labor laws.

What does Bernie Sanders have to do in order to win the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries and take part in the 2016 general election?

As of February 2016, Bernie Sanders appears to be leading in most demographics of the Democratic Party. Whatever his current strategy is, it seems to be the one most likely to propel him to victory in the Democratic primary. Whether it will serve him well in a Presidential election depends entirely on which Republican is his adversary.--Update--As of March 2016, it is clear that Bernie Sanders is not effectively courting the Black and Latino communities. In order to be victorious, he would have to embrace the kind of race-baiting that Hillary Clinton engages in, in order to bring these groups on his side. Ultimately the last few primaries that he lost were lost on account of the Black vote.
