It depends whether the speed is real or theoretical. That said, your asymmetrical speeds are highly irregular, as normally, download speeds are many times higher than upload speeds.

To sum it up, though, 291/527 is not fast. It is high-speed, alright, in the sense that it is not dial-up. But as far as broadband internet speeds go, this is pretty slow. Five mbps would be fast. Anything about one is generally good. Anything below is equivalent to the introductory services most ISPs (Internet Service Providers) offer.

In a fast paced high tech age, internet speed has become an important issue. These days, people want the fastest possible broadband internet service in their homes. When selecting an internet service provider, it is important to understand that the download and upload speeds are significantly different. However, most users rarely upload anything online so the download speed is the most important feature to consider.

I have a 512kbs connection. I can only download at 56kbs even with a download manager. My idea was to use it for online game hosting but everyone drops and says its horrible. Is this good?

No, it's really not good. A 512kbs connection is really not the kind of connection you wanna host an online game server with. It is barely the kind of connection you want to access the Internet with.. First of all, there's two sides to an Internet connection: Download speed (in this case 512kbs) and upload speed. The download speed is the one that dictates the speed at which you download information from other people (web-browsing, playing games, downloading torrents etc.), and it doesn't matter how fast your download speed is when you want to host games. Upload speed governs the speed at which you share information with people (seeding torrents, hosting a game/server etc.). The more powerful your upload speed is, the better it is for people to play on your server. In 99% of all cases, the download speed of an Internet connection is a lot higher than the upload speed (normally around 5 to 8 times more), meaning that your upload speed will be incredibly weak if your download speed is 512kbs. Unless you're paying to have as powerful an upload as download, your upload will be less than 512kbs. Normally people who set up game servers have an upload speed of 5 megabits (over 5000 kilobits) or more. You should note that when we're talking about Internet connections, the speed is measured in bits, not bytes. One byte = 8 bits, meaning that since your connection is 512kbs (kilobits per second), your maximum download speed is around 64 kilobytes per second. This link solidifies my statement: http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/?input_amount=512&input_units=kilobits&notation=legacy. Seeing as how cheap Internet connections are these days, I recommend that you get a more powerful one, because with the way web design is going, web pages will take longer and longer to load up, due to loads of Flash content and huge piles of data. I would also advise you to go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and check to see exactly how fast your Internet connection is.
