It depends what you mean by "dating". I have a 10 year old and a 12 year old. My 4th grader likes to say she's "going out" with someone but that is as far as it is taken. No phone calls, etc. My 6th grader is "going out" with a girl. They text each other and maybe chat online (all monitored very closely by me). It is fairly innocent. I think if "dating" is referring to going to the movies, etc. (especially being dropped off by the parent and seeing the movie alone) then I think that is taking it too far. Parents need to stay involved at this age to help them and guide them through these times of maturing... having them "go it" alone can be deterimental.
