As a person that has been involved with old safes I can say that if a person has a knowledge of how safes work (by specific manufacturers) that someone with a good sense of touch can repeatedly try and eventually succeed in "working" the combination to successfully open the safe. The problem is that it usually takes a long time and in a quiet environment. Additionally, there is a specific "drill pattern" that a person (knowledgeable/experienced) can use to drill the back of an older style safe to allow access to the lock mechanism on the opposite side front door, again this all takes time and familiarity. An inexperienced person will not succeed.
