The color red is a symbol of death and war. In the scarlet ibis, the bird was red because it was foreshadowing death, in this case, it was the death of the crippled brother named Doodle. You may also notice that war is mentioned in this short story, and is represented by the two brothers. Going back to your original question, I think that red also was a symbol of the pain that both the scarlet ibis and doodle had to suffer.

In "The Scarlet Ibis," some red objects include Doodle's coffin, the bird itself, and the vibrant crimson foliage in the surrounding environment. These red elements symbolize themes of love, passion, sacrifice, and mortality throughout the story.

Nothing in the story as it begins has anything to do with a scarlet ibis, so the reader is left wondering what is the connection between a story About a Boy with physical handicaps and a bird that is not common to the area. Then suddenly a scarlet ibis appears in the "bleeding tree" and falls to the ground dead from exhaustion of having to fly too far during a storm. The reader gets a foreshadowing now that Doodle, who is being pushed to overcome his physical handicaps is going to die from the same kind of over exertion.

The ibis itself; Doodle's body when he is born; the blood from Doodle's mouth; the blood on his shirt; the bush under which Doodle dies. In addition, the tree known as "the bleeding tree" conjures the image of blood even though trees do not bleed. The tree probably had reddish sap seeping through its bark.

yes, it is significant because the color red is a prominent symbol in the scarlet ibis (if you look through out the story you will see the color red many times). it also helps foreshadow that the scarlet ibis is going to die.
