Des is a combination of de + les, so one time you would use it would be when saying from the (plural) eg. I bought clothes from the United States -- j'ai acheté les vêtements des États-Unis.

Another time you would use it is when there is an unspecified amount of something or when you want to say 'some' eg. some apples - des pommes
