it comes from a very ancient, religious symbol in India that means peace and balance. The Indian symbol has the ends pointing north, south, east, and west; instead of sideways. The Nazis took this symbol and rotated it, making the meaning of it be more that of disorder, chaos, and unbalanced times.

The word is derived from the word svastika which means any lucky or auspicious object.

Also it denotes luck and is used all over the world. It carrys many different meanings with different religious groups. In the ancient Hindu religion the swastika is supposed to bring good luck

The first is fortune, typically good fortune.

The second meaning is for cyclic existence, the cycle of birth and death.

The cycle of birth and death is characterized by karma, or "action", the law of cause and effect, thus fortune, or the results of one's actions.

Peace, good fortune, and light.

It always was a divine symbol, according to the vedas. Not to make confusing statements, in Vedic Hindu philosophy, it is not necessary or even accepted that things "originate" or first become created, or necessarily have a date of original appearance. It is considered that many things have existed without a date of creation.

It was pre-empted by the National Socialist Party in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s and represented that oppressive regime.
