By production, 9.0%. By consumption, 6.2%.
According to the National Energy Renewable Laboratory 2013 Databook, renewable electricity grew to nearly 15% of total installed capacity and 13% of total electricity generation in the United Statesin 2013. See pages 8 and 9 for % coal, gas, petroleum, nuclear and renewable production and consumption by year from 2000 through 2013.

In 2005 world renewable energy was around 10%. Most of this was from biofuel, mostly wood used for heating and cooking in small rural villages. The percentage of biofuel is decreasing slowly as more people move to regular electricity.
The EU is working to reduce the effects of climate change and establish a common energy policy. As part of this policy, European Heads of State or Government agreed in March 2007 on binding targets to increase the share of renewable energy. By 2020 renewable energy should account for 20% of the EU's final energy consumption (8,5% in 2005). To meet this common target, each Member State needs to increase its production and use of renewable energy in electricity, heating and cooling and transport. The Belgian target is for about 13% in 2015. (2005 = 2.2%) Policy measures in Belgium contain incentives to use the most cost-effective technologies. Biomass is traditionally strong in Belgium, but both hydro-power and onshore wind generation have shown strong growth in recent years. Renewable energy sources are being supported by investment incentives in all three regions. The maximum level of support is as high as 15% in the Walloon region and 20% in both Flanders and Brussels.
According to the US Institute for Energy Research, coal in 2005 was responsible for 26% of global energy production. This percentage is dropping each year as more countries and power plants move to oil and gas, the burning of which releases less harmful carbon dioxide emissions than coal. There is movement too in the establishment of renewable energy power (solar, wind, water, hydro, tidal and wave, geothermal, ocean thermal, biomass and biofuel).
Brazil has a 37% target to cut emissions by 2025 compared with 2005. It is promising to boost renewable energy, but its real problem is the speed of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.
