One parent will be designated the "representative payee" for the child's benefits. Usually the parent who filed the retirement or disability claim will fill out a form accepting responsibility for handling the benefits, if that parent is considered competent to manage his or her own money and hasn't committed a felony in the past.

If the child receives a lump sum settlement for back pay, the representative payee is required to set up a separate savings account, showing the child as the owner, to protect the child's benefits.

Will disability social security pay for cremation?

A one-time payment of $255 is payable to the surviving spouse if he or she was living with the beneficiary at the time of death, OR if living apart, was eligible for Social Security benefits on the beneficiary's earnings record for the month of death. If there is no surviving spouse, the payment is made to a child who was eligible for benefits on the beneficiary's earnings record in the month of death.Monthly survivors benefits can be paid to certain family members, including the beneficiary's widow or widower, dependent children and dependent parents. The following booklets contain more information about filing for benefits and can be downloaded; see related linksSurvivors Benefits (Publication No. 05-10084)Social Security: Understanding the Benefits(Publication No. 05-10024)A family member or other person responsible for the beneficiary's affairs should do the following: Promptly notify Social Security of the beneficiary's death.

Can you travel while on short term disability?

If you are receiving benefits from Social Security Disability Insurance, your moving will not affect the reception of benefits at all. Make sure to alert your Security office of your change of address so that you continue to receive correspondence from Social Security and your checks as well. If you are receiving benefits from Supplemental Security Insurance, moving could change the amount you receive in benefits, and it can also alter your eligibility to receive benefits at all. Some states add a payment to the federal SSI and detract this payment from your check each month. If you are moving from a state with no supplementary payment to one that does have one, your disability check will be slightly smaller in the new state. Disability benefits are also tied to income, so if your income changes, your disability payment will likely change as well. Call your local security office if you have any questions or concerns regarding your disability payments.

Can you receive unemployment benefits and Social Security benefits at the same time in Illinois?

Yes, but unfortunately, Illinois and Louisiana are the only states that have not changed the law that deducts money from unemployment payments to people who also receive social securityHere's the formula in Illinois -- multiply your monthly social security payment by 12 (months). Divide that amount by 52 (weeks). Divide that amount in half and that's the amount that will be deducted from your weekly unemployment payment. If you have a dependent, usually a spouse, the amount might be a little different. But not by much.Realize the unemployment benefits are reduced, not the Social Security benefits. Your Social Security benefits will continue at the expected rate.Example:$1,200 monthly social security payment x 12 months = $14,400$14,400 / 52 weeks = $279.92 / 2 = $139.96eligible for $385 weekly unemployment payment - $139.96 = $245.04 is your weekly unemployment paymentThis unfair law can only be repealed by the State Legislature. Illinois AARP has made it a priority. Does a payee makes the payment or receives the payment?

Can I get social security benefits if I retired from taking care of a family member?

Usually not for that. You only qualify for social security benefits if you earned wages for the work and both you and your employer payed into social security. On normal jobs your portion of this payment is taken automatically from your paycheck in a deduction called the FICA deduction.
