What is kal kote plaster?

Kal-Kote Finish Plaster is a white finish plaster that can be troweled on and left with a smooth or textured finish, over base coat and on top of blue board. We also use this plaster when we are resurfacing existing walls and ceilings that have been prepared using plaster washers and fiberglass mesh tapes over the cracks, and gluing the entire surface with "Plaster Weld " ( a Larson product ) to create a bond over previously painted walls and ceilings . We also tint the plaster to make any color desired , and apply two coats of machined buffed wax to give the walls a satin smooth finish burnished with steel wool .You will never have to paint again !

What is plaster ceiling?

Before the invention of dry wall (some call it plaster board or gypsum board), walls and ceilings were slathered with plaster of Paris over lathe board (small, thin slats of wood that were nailed to the studs). This was smoothed out or in the case of some ceilings, sculpted into decorative shapes. Sometimes, crown molding was even sculpted directly on the walls with plaster. So, a plastered cieling is just that--a ceiling that has been plastered. It is a work intensive craft, and requires a high degree of skill and training to do.

Can you paint car paint on plaster ceilings?

What you are calling "car paint" is probably lacquer based, and would really soak into a plaster ceiling. If you are doing a design or something, this may be appropriate, but other than that, not good for coverage.

What is the difference between mortar and stucco?

Mortar is lime/sand or more recently cement/sand mixture used to 'glue' bricks and blocks together. Stucco is a decorative plaster applied to walls and ceilings to embellish the basic structure. Coving and ceiling roses are an example of ornate plasterwork. In a ddition to its use for bonding building bricks together mortar is used for surfaces to give a smooth finish, somewhat like plaster, this is called rendering in some locations. Stucco is similar in that it has aggregate added to give it a rough or textured finish.

How do you vault your ceilings?

There are several different vaulted ceilings. Cross or Groin, Barrel, and several deviations of symmetry of such. Some people refer to "Cathedral" ceilings or "tray" ceilings as vaulted ceilings, but they are not in the "puritan" vein. Assuming that the existing framework is up to local building codes, and the height is adequate, a plywood re reinforced template with2x's, every 16"o.c. or 24"o.c. or as needed, suspended from the existing ceiling/wall framing. This will serve well for wire lath & plaster, and will last over a lifetime due to the strength of the wire lath and plaster system. For drywall attachment the framing is much more ardrous and the time is better served to upgrade the finish plaster and not spend money framing. Wire lath can suffice the tightest of radius's as well. Don't forget, if you have a window dormer or window within the ceiling assembly, make it interesteing by "returning" the window to the ceiling using the same radius as the ceiling only adjacent to the ceiling for the desired distance of the return. Freedom of form-Wire lath & Plaster-That's why it's been around for 2000+yrs. & in essence, your building your own trusses.
