I am not 100% sure but you would probably need to go back to school and take the necessary classes and licensure to be able to practice independently. I am pursuing an M.Ed in School Counseling now and have wondered the same thing in case I decide later on not to work in a school setting anymore. I would do some research but I'm sure it's doable. Good luck!
The difference is the level of education. You can become a counselor several ways. For example, you can get a masters degree in social work and be a licensed clinical social worker, or get a masters degree in pastoral counseling or school counseling. A psychologist has a PhD. FYI, a psychiatrist is an MD.
You could become a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

Get a Bachelors in Psychology...then after that you go to graduate school for about 2 more years get a masters, and you can do some counseling work...Although if you want to be a psychologist you have to stay in school for 2 more years on top of that to get a doctorate degree. Then after graduating you work for about 2-7 years depending, and then you can become a psychologist. Sounds difficult but its not too bad.
To qualify to practice as a licensed clinical psychologist you must complete a 4 year clinical psychology course. This usually can be concurrent with a masters of psychology program. Which a masters can be earned within 1.5 to 2 years and is needed to obtain the PhD. This 4 year course is to obtain a PhD or also know as a doctorate of clinical psychology.
