School counselors can become directors or supervisors of counseling, guidance, or pupil personnel services; or, usually with further graduate education, become counselor educators, counseling psychologists, or school administrators. Some marriage and family therapists, especially those with doctorates in family therapy, become supervisors, teachers, researchers, or advanced clinicians in the discipline. Some may choose to pursue a doctoral degree to improve their chances for advancement.

Master's degrees generally take up to 2 years. However, it depends heavily on the program that you enroll in. In Europe, some programs have strict curriculums that take 2 years. In North America, an M.Sc. degree takes 2 years but due to its research essence you can probably finish the degree in 1.5 years with dedication, hard work and some luck. In Britain, most master's degrees (MPhil) take 9 months to 1 year.
