well, nothing. the electricity is just sitting there in the filament holder of the bulb going nowhere, no current no light. no cost either for that matter...
Open the rear glass hatch which will expose the sheet metal screws securing the plastic lens housing to the rear pillar. Unscrew them - carefully pull the lens housing away from the pillar noting the electrical wires that run to the sockets in the rear of the lens housing. Carefully turn the sockets approximately 1/4 turn and remove the sockets exposing the bulbs. Change the burnt out bulbs and re-install everything in the reverse order of removal.

burnt bulbs replace them correct answer if the bulbs work on one side, but same bulbs dont work on other side , u have a broken wire to the side that doesnot work if the bulbs were burnt out, they would not work on either side

Are you sure they are burnt out?? A 1998 model year vehicle is much too young to have theat many burned out bulbs. There is something else that is causing this problem.
The VW polo has headlight bulbs. If the headlights are not working, it may be a bulb has burnt out.
Normally this happens when one of the bulbs is burnt out. Make sure all bulbs are working.

Most likely because one (or more) of the signal light bulbs is burnt out from the fast flashing side. Check them first, replace the burnt bulb, and they should go back to normal. If there are no burnt out bulbs, then you might consider replacing the turn signal relay.
