High tides occur at places on Earth when they are (more or less) closest to the Moon.

The Moon's gravity attracts Earth's water most at those places.

There is also a high tide, at the same time, on the opposite side of the Earth.

The water there feels the smallest gravitational pull from the Moon.

So, that water is "left behind" and there is a tidal bulge there too.

This often confuses people and a proper explanation really needs a bit of

physics and mathematics. The main thing to understand is that tidal effects depend upon differences in the strength of gravity at various points.

No, it's high tide on the opposite side as well. It's low tide halfway to the other side (either direction). In other words, if you call one of the high tide points 0 degrees, the other one will be at 180 degrees, and low tide will be at the 90 and 270 degree marks.
