Chicken eggs are non fertilised however in rare cases some can be fertilised depending on the Hens activity with a cockeral. however in the most case, the hens never see a cockeral and so the eggs are never fertilised. Duck eggs however are fertilised. Ducks, unlike chickens, only lay eggs when they are fertilised. Hence why you may notice that the shelf life of duck eggs in a supermarket are much shorter then those of chicken eggs.

No they are not because all commercial eggs you buy from the store come from farms that have hen only operations, which means that there are no roosters, and therfore the egg will not be fertelized.

No, store bought eggs from major grocery chains are neverfertilized unless marked as such and that usually only happens in Health food stores. Mating takes energy and large commercial egg production farms need those birds devoting all their energy into egg production. Hens must be exposed to a rooster in order to have fertile eggs, and the hens that lay eggs sold in stores have usually never even seen a rooster. Mass produced eggs from poultry farms are not fertilized as they do not keep any roosters on site. Rooster chicks are culled at the hatcheries and most are sold off to meat producers if not dispatched immediately. You can find fertilized eggs at health food stores, farmers markets and at farms along the highway.

If you buy eggs from a small store that buys from local suppliers the eggs very well could be fertile. If the eggs have been refrigerated to the temperature that most laws state they must be stored at, they have most likely been too cold to hatch.

they are unfertilized
One thing you need to know is you wont be eating any chicks. I think they sometimes give the hens something. And they lay eggs even when they havent mated. So dont worry.
unfertilised

You can certainly try. It may be too long since fertilization. But if it's been handled right, you may end up with a chick.

Why is a chicken egg a fertilized egg?

Not all chicken eggs are fertilized. Any egg that a chicken lays will be unfertilized unless there is a rooster around to fertilize the egg while it is inside the chicken.Chicken eggs are fertilized when a rooster is in with the hens. The rooster will breed with the hens to continute the chicken species. This is why eggs are fertilized. If you do not want your eggs fertilized, all you need to do is pull out the rooster, or roosters if there are more than one. This will cause the chickens to lya unfertilized eggs. When an egg is fertile it means it was in the beginning stage of hosting a baby. Basically, it is an egg from a hen that had previously had sex with a rooster. You probably don't want to think about that before eating them though. They are the most nutritious form of egg to eat.

Is there any different in the nutritional value of the fertilized egg and unfertilized eggs?

There is no nutritional difference between a fertilized and an unfertilized egg. People prefer to eat unfertilized commercial layer eggs, so they don't feel like they are eating the next generation. Also a fertilized egg does not have as long of a shelf life as the unfertilized one does.

Is there a difference between the nutritional value of fertilized and unfertilized eggs?

Hens will lay eggs regularly without the necessity for fertilization. The only difference between a fertilized and unfertilized egg is that a fertilized egg has the potential to hatch and become a chick, while the other does not. Several prominent institutions have conducted studies comparing the nutritional values of fertilized eggs to unfertilized eggs. The result was that both kinds of eggs are nutritionally the same.

What do you call an egg that is not yet matured?

An unfertilized egg is called an oocyte. That is the proper term for an unfertilized egg from any creature. Chicken eggs do not need to be categorized this way as consumers would not need to know that chicken eggs can be purchased fertilized. They would assume the eggs were unfertilized. A fertilized egg is called a Zygote.
